If you’re like me the beginning of spring means something new fresh -cleaning out the old things going through an organizing, and it brings about a sense of renewal in my body and heart
One thing I’ve started doing is, at the beginning of spring re-evaluate my spiritual walk and spiritual goals. Not so much yearly goals, but reflecting on what God is telling me I need to improve in my Christian walk moving forward and what God might be doing in my heart convicting me to change or start new.
A lot of us know the time in the Bible where David is pouring out his grievance to God after he’s sinned with Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan has come to him and called out his sin.
And some of the chapter of psalms 51 is hard to read as he laments over his transgression, but also pleads for a renewed spirit.
One of the key passages he writes has become a time old reference that we hear often- and even has a song from it.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”Psalm 51:10,12
I love this because it reminds us that God takes our messes and even our hard to get to places in our hearts and cleans them. He restores us and convicts us to grow in our spiritual walk.
Sometimes it’s a relationship that needs repaired or let go of, sometimes it’s a responsibility you’ve neglected. Sometimes it’s an excuse you’ve been using for why not to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus. Sometimes it’s an anxious thought pattern you won’t let Christ interrupt. Or even an unhealthy habit in your life.
But the concept here is all the same, we have to let go of things we shouldn’t have as spiritual burdens in our life to make room for the new things Christ wants to do in us.
What is something you need to clean out of your spiritual walk to enable growth?
I encourage you to write it on a piece of paper and to bury it at the bottom of a new potted plant as a symbol. And instead see the beautiful picture of growth as a reminder for what you are leaving behind and starting new!
