Fashion Friday ~ How To Build an Outfit

How to Build an outfit.

For me, one thing that I’ve done ever since the 9th grade was put an outfit together for the next day so it was one less thing for me to choose and less of a time sucker. Sometimes it would even be just a blouse I knew I wanted to wear with a certain necklace, sometimes the full outfit down to the shoes. But this little task I did the night before has kept with me until now, and is something that I love doing and takes a smidge of time and helps me put to together a thought out outfit. Now some days there might be two different blouses I want to wear, or can’t decide on what pair of jeans. And the terrific thing about doing this the night before is that by the morning of, I’ve decided which one I really want to wear. For some of you, this may sound crazy, and I get it. But I challenge you to try it just for a few days, and you’ll probably notice that your sense of style has developed a little more each day as you consider what goes and what doesn’t, and you’ll stick with this routine too!

So to actually build an outfit, we’re gonna do it in three simple steps!

1. Pick a centerpiece.2. Pick the color scheme.3. Find the missing item.

So the first thing that I do when picking an outfit is to find my centerpiece. I’ve talked about this before in former posts, but having a centerpiece is super important for an outfit because it’s the foundation. And it can be anything you want it to be: a necklace, pair of shoes, belt, blouse, pants, you name it.
After you’ve picked your centerpiece, you pick your color scheme. Whether you’ve picked a blouse that has multiple colors or a belt that’s a solid color, either way, there’s a color that either compliments it or stands out. And playing around with it, finding what catches your eye is a big part in this. One tidbit tho is, don’t pick a color that is very close but not identical. For instance, If you’re wearing a maroon blouse, don’t wear a red cardigan with it, it will clash and mix wrong color tones. Rather pick a white or grey cardigan to compliment the maroon and make it stand out. This will help with all your color choices in an outfit.
Last but definitely not least, once I’ve completed my base for an outfit and colors, I always am missing that one final item. So the best thing to do is mentally go through a checklist of my outfit essentials. Do I have earrings on, maybe I need a scarf, or perhaps switching necklaces is what it needs? What about my pant legs, rolled up or down? These are all little things that can change the game of your outfit, so they all matter, and can be the difference between a good outfit and a fabulous one!

And that’s it! I hope this is a help to you as it has changed the way I put together my outfits, has made the task fun and insightful, and a time saver. And if you’re ever in question about an item, drop me a note, I would love to help you! Happy outfit building!
